In the early hours of today, 24th April, 2021, Nigeria Police Force and their counterparts from the Nigerian Army and DSS raided the operational headquarters of Insurgents (IPOB Militias) in Awomama Village Oru East LGA of Imo State in a joint operation.
The insurgents are responsible for the April 5th, 2021 assault on the Imo State Police Headquarters and the Nigerian Correctional Service Headquarters. They have also carried out a number of calculated, aggressive attacks on security forces and formations in the country’s south east and south south.
As the security forces approached the insurgents’ headquarters, they were met with heavy fire from the insurgents. The joint security forces fought back valiantly in a brave and clinical response.
The Forces finally neutralised the overall leader of the insurgents in the Southeast, recognised as Ikonso Commander, as well as six (6) other armed insurgent soldiers. Commander Ikonso is the group’s militia activities coordinator as well as the Vice President designate.
He planned and coordinated the assault on the Imo Police Headquarters, as well as many other assaults on security and military personnel and facilities.
The operation is part of a concerted effort by the police and other security forces to halt separatist activity in Imo State and other states in the country’s South East and South South regions.
The security team rescued the remains of Ikonso Commander and six (6) of his fighters after a fierce gun battle. Several sophisticated weapons, including six AK47 rifles, hundreds of different calibre ammunition, and a plethora of charms, including bullet Proof charms, were seized from the insurgents.
At the time of writing, three police officers and one army officer were being treated for severe bullet wounds suffered during an exchange of fire with insurgents.
