The ruling All Progressives Congress (APCDeputy )’s National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, has threatened to report Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Rev Fr. Ejike Mbaka, to the Pope and Vatican for allegedly committing actions capable of causing chaos in the world.
The APC leader said that the cleric’s recent calls for President Muhammadu Buhari’s impeachment were capable of inciting citizens against their leader and causing disaffection for the government.
Mbaka, who publicly supported President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and did so again for his reelection in 2019, recently called on Buhari to resign or the National Assembly to impeach him if he does not resign due to escalating insecurity in a church service.
During a service, the cleric lamented that no civilised leader could remain in power in the face of the country’s recent abuse.
“How can people be dying and the country’s chief security officer sit down without saying anything?” he wondered.
He went on to say, “Gunmen are shooting people everywhere.” Following his (alleged) failure as a leader, Buhari should have resigned honourably. Let me tell you, if this were a civilised world, President Buhari would have stepped down by now. So it is incredible that he has chosen to remain silent when people are dying on a regular basis.”
In the face of widespread poverty and instability, he urged the National Assembly to impeach the President.
However, Nabena said in an Abuja statement on Friday that it was unfortunate for a man of God “who is supposed to deploy all known spiritual means of averting crisis to be threatening a duly elected government for his own personal gain while claiming to speak for the people.”
He alluded to Mark 4:35-40, in which Jesus Christ calmed the storm when a strong wind blew up and the waves were about to crash into the ships.
Instead of complaining or accusing the captain of the ships, Jesus prayed and calmed the storm, according to Nabena.
“One may wonder who Father Mbaka is modelling himself after, since the Lord Jesus Christ did not try to bring down the government during his lifetime. In reality, Jesus Christ obeyed and respected established authorities. That is why he paid his income tax.
“We are urging Father Mbaka to focus on his spiritual calling and avoid speaking in the manner of politicians with whom he (Mbaka) has clearly dined and won. It is preferable to leave a political note for politicians if Mbaka has found another political ally.
“Calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to resign or be impeached as a result of the current problems are ungodly. Father Mbaka, on the other hand, should not push his luck too far because he has a lot to tell the Vatican and the Pope about himself and his sources of inspiration,” he said.
Nabena also urged other clerics to follow in the footsteps of Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Pastor WF Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Bible Ministry, among others, who would fast and pray to avert crisis rather than challenging the government of the day.
