Two police officers were killed by gunmen believed to be part of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Akwa Ibom yesterday. According to reports, hoodlums stormed the Ikono Police Divisional Headquarters in Ibiaku Ntok Okpo about 3 a.m., burning down five police vehicles and injuring a policewoman on night duty. SP Odiko MacDon, a police spokesperson, and Mr Nsisong Ntuk, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area, both confirmed the incident.
According to Ntuk, the hoodlums even hoisted their flag at the police station. “Today, Saturday 1st May 2021, the Executive Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area received a distress call about the invasion of the Police Station at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo by criminals suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) at 3am,” he said.
“In the ensuing melee, two police officers were killed, five cars were burned, and a policewoman on night duty was seriously wounded, the flag hoisted at the police station was seized, and the invaders committed destructive actions. He assured that the Council Chair, in cooperation with relevant security agencies, was working tirelessly to ensure that the situation was contained and that the appropriate steps were placed in place to prevent such occurrences.
