According to police, an unknown gunman struck and killed a commissioner as he was driving down the road in Kogi State on Saturday.
Solomon Adebayo, Governor Yahaya Bello’s pensions commissioner, was reportedly killed on Saturday evening while travelling from Ilorin to the Kabba district.
According to Kogi police spokesman William Ayah, the assailants opened fire on Mr Adebayo’s vehicle along the lane, killing him on the spot and critically injuring his driver. The police said they would conduct an investigation to find and apprehend those responsible for the deadly attack. It was uncertain if the attackers took something from the victims.
The driver, whose identity was not immediately revealed, was taken to ECWA Hospital Egbe along with other victims of the attack. The remains of the slain commissioner were also interred here.
Mr Adebayo, Akeweje of Eri Land in Kogi, was assassinated overnight, and his death was being mourned across the state. It came as President Muhammadu Buhari was under pressure to resolve a rising security crisis that has complicated economic activities and left large swaths of ungoverned territory in the hands of bandits, kidnappers, and insurgents.
Mr Buhari’s meeting with his national security chiefs ended in a stalemate on Friday night after some of the chiefs failed to prepare a proper rundown of the crisis for the president, according to NSA Babagana Monguno in a tweet.
