On Monday, the Oyo State Police Command announced that it had seized an AK-47 rifle from a suspected gunrunner who had been terrorising citizens of Oyo and Ogun states.
The command said in a statement made available to DAILY POST Monday morning by its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, that the suspect who fled into a bush was spotted by operatives attached to the command’s surveillance unit while on active stop and search duty.
He went on to say that the suspect was apprehended by police about 1630 hrs at Bakari, a border village between Oyo and Ogun states.
Osifeso clarified that although police attempts to apprehend the suspect were futile, some things were retrieved from him.
According to the Police Spokesman, one of the objects seized from the suspect is an AK-47 rifle with breech number 353913.
“Today, Sunday 2/05/2021, at approximately 1630HRS, operatives attached to the Command’s Monitoring Unit while on aggressive stop and search duty at Bakari, a border village between Oyo and Ogun, have reported yet another breakthrough in the battle against crime and criminality,” he said.
“From afar, the suspect spotted the tactical officers conducting their routine intelligence-driven checks before suddenly turning his Bajaj Motorcycle to escape.
“In quick reaction, the Tactical operatives pursued the fleeing suspect into the pathways leading into a nearby forest, resulting in a sack dropping off the back of his Bajaj Motorcycle. A quick inspection of the contents of the sack showed an AK-47 Rifle with breech number 353913.
“Extensive efforts are underway not only to arrest the suspect, but also to disrupt his criminal network and supply chain.
“CP Ngozi Onadeko, Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, enjoins the good people of the state to collaborate with the Police in terms of exchanging reliable and timely information useful in curbing crime and birthing the stable Oyo State of our collective dreams.”
