Following his failure to address Nigeria’s security issues, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called for President Muhammadu Buhari’s impeachment.
In an interview with AIT on Monday morning, the NEF’s spokesman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said the nation could not wait another two years for Buhari to resolve insecurity issues.
He said that those with the constitutional duty to protect Nigeria must recognise the country’s desperate situation and do more than make promises.
The second choice, according to the spokesman, is for people to band together and discuss what to do.
“The third choice is that those leaders who are struggling will recognise that they are the issue and resign because they simply have little to give in terms of leadership,” Baba-Ahmed said.
“As our democratic structure requires, those with the authority to remove them should impeach those who are failing. If the president fails to deliver on his promises, he should be impeached.
“We do not seem to have a National Assembly with the patriotism and concern that extends beyond party politics to recognise that when this roof collapses, it often collapses on their heads.
“Partisanship is so strong that the people we elected and sent to Abuja believe they are serving the President rather than the Nigerian people.”
