The Senate is amending the Terrorism Prevention Act to ban the payment and collection of ransom in exchange for the release of abducted individuals.

Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi introduced the Bill, which received its second reading during the plenary on Wednesday.

Senator Onyewuchi, who is leading the bill debate, claims that kidnapping has become a fast and lucrative industry, and that Nigeria has the highest rate of kidnaps for ransom of both locals and foreigners in Africa, according to the USA Global Risk Consultancy.

He cautioned that continuous ransom payments should be discouraged and that the government should provide sufficient protection to end the country’s kidnapping problem.
