Today, UNIDENTIFIED gunmen attacked the Umutu police station in Delta’s Ukwuani Local Government Area, killing five people.
Three police officers and two armed men were killed in the ensuing gun battle as the police resisted the attack.
Mr Bright Edafe, the state command’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident in a statement. “In the early hours of today, 28th May 2021, at approximately 0130 hours, armed men in their numbers stormed Umutu police station.”
“They fired intermittently at the station, but due to proactive measures already implemented by the Delta state commissioner of police, they encountered stiff resistance from the men on duty, who put up a valiant fight.
“When the armed men saw that the on-duty police officers would not relent, two of the armed bandits were gunned down and others were injured.
“When they were forced to retreat, they quickly carried their dead and fled. The Command lost two officers, while one ASP died in the hospital due to high blood pressure.
“The armed bandit who came with the intention of causing mayhem, setting fire to the station, and carting away arms failed, as they were unable to penetrate the station; no arms were lost, the station was not set on fire, and normalcy was restored.
“The Commissioner of Police assures the public that all necessary measures have been taken to apprehend those responsible for this act and also encourages the public to assist with useful and timely information.”
