Nigerians have condemned the heinous killings and violent attacks in Benue State by suspected herders and gunmen on social media.
According to The Nation, gunmen have been attacking Benue’s communities incessantly over the last few weeks.
Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State had urged the state’s residents to obtain Dane gun licences from local government areas for self-defense.
“I will no longer announce the deaths of those killed by Fulani herdsmen; instead, I urge you to rise up and defend yourselves with weapons not prohibited by law, such as bows and arrows, spears, and knives. Obtain a licence for dane guns from your local government chairman and use them to defend yourself,” he advised.
With over 100,000 tweets using the hashtag #BenueUnderAttack, many lamented the spate of killings across the state.
The Nation has learned that there is concern over the alleged killing of several people in the state’s Katsina Ala LGA, which has left many homeless.
While the number of those allegedly killed has varied, many Nigerians have drawn authorities’ attention to gory images allegedly depicting mass killings.
Nigerians also urged security agencies to step up efforts to put an end to senseless violent crimes in which lives are taken without regard.
In response, Reno Omokri, a former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, stated that “Unless Benue gets their own Sunday Igboho, these near-daily attacks that have defined #BenueUnderAttack will continue to occur.” If the people of Benue come into conflict with cows, General @MBuhari will ALWAYS side with the cows. Benue requires an Igboho ally #TableShaker.”
Aisha Yesufu, co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement, stated, “Benue people’s lives must be protected.” There is no Nigerian who is more Nigerian than another. #AttackOnTheBenue”
Kate Henshaw, a Nollywood actress, lamented, “As much as I am attempting to focus on other things. The images of bodies strewn across the floor have dampened my spirits somewhat. Why is life so meaningless in Nigeria? To our sovereigns?? There has been far too much bloodshed….far too much #BenueUnderAttack.”
Another commentator, FS Yusuf, stated, “Ortom must understand that terrorists have declared war on his people and that he must prepare them to fight and defend themselves.” Make us forget about all the English we speak here. We’re all insane! They are assassinating innocent Christians in Benue State.
“We can no longer fold our hands and watch. #AttackOnTheBenue. People are being murdered in their homes and on their lands, and the government is keeping an eye on it. This is a time bomb on the verge of detonating. Protege tous les citoyens nigerians!” Aproko Doctor expressed regret.
